The Bishop of Dover has condemned the Home Office after it announced the end of the scheme to receive migrant children via the so-called Dubs amendment at the end of March.

Just 350 children will have been admitted to the UK.

Following the Home Office announcement regarding its policy on the transfer of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children to the UK, Rt Rev Trevor Willmott the Bishop of Dover has issued the following statement:

‘While commending the steps that have already been taken by Government under the Dubs amendment, it is deeply worrying to learn that this vital effort is to be curtailed.

Not the time to step back

Now is not the time to step back from our responsibility towards the vulnerable children so desperately in need of our care and protection.

Through the work we are engaged with here in Kent we are acutely aware of the challenges, but also of the life-changing impact that our country’s offer of safety, stability and compassion brings to the children and families who have been resettled here in our communities.

I would urge us not to lose sight of our shared humanity with those fleeing intolerable conflict and danger, but to continue to reach out to them as fellow brothers and sisters.’
