Three watersports fanatics who hoped to become the first people to officially windsurf across the Channel have failed in their attempt.

David Schickler, 25, from London, Andy Bramah, 25, from Weymouth, and James Potten, from Yeovil, set off this afternoon ( 9 October) from Dover but decided to abandon their attempt 5 miles out after battling with strong winds.

Before setting off, Mr Shickler, a windsurf instructor, said the group could reach speeds of about 30mph and make the 25-mile trip in as little as an hour providing no big tankers got in the way.

They hoped to raise £2,000 for Children in Crisis, a charity helping youngsters in war-torn countries.
