Following Shepway Council Leader Cllr Linda Cufley's rejection of the plan brokered by local MP Michael Howard with KCC to save the council £600,000, Shepway tories are refuting the claims put forward by Cllr Cuffley that the deal did 'not stack up'.

They claim Ms Cufley issued her attack on the Conservative Party Leader just hours before polling took place in the election for Folkestone Parish Council and the European Elections.

In the Conservative press release they said that Nick Chard, KCC Cabinet member for finance, explained the savings were vital to council taxpayers across Shepway, and can be made. They say that he has called Ms Cufley's rejection of Mr Howard's plan 'extraordinarily insulting and offhand', after officers from both authorities consulted together to bring the plan about.'

Kent County Council Leader Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart has said that every week that goes by without agreeing to start the savings is costing Shepway residents more money.

Shepway's council tax rise last May for the year 2004-5 was 29%, one of the highest in England.
