Articles: Barge breaks free of moorings off Sandgate

Coastguards  were called to secure a barge carrying stone which broke free of its moorings off the beach at Sandgate during today's storms

<FONT color=black>A Coastguard tug was sent out after the barge drifted into busy shipping lanes before heading back to shore and threatening to crash into the harbour wall at Dover.

<FONT color=black>The weather caused Cross Channel ferries to be suspended just after 1.00pm ( 23 June) and they did not resume until 7.00pm.

Operation Stack which allows police to "park" lorries o­n the motorway while the port is closed, was put in force o­n the M20 between junctions 9 and 11.
