John Soares, 51, was sentenced in his absence at Maidstone Crown Court in May 2012 after he failed to attend his trial.

A jury convicted Soares of grievous bodily harm after hearing how he shot his partner with the weapon leaving her with pellets in her leg in July 2003.

He failed to appear for court in 2004 but was arrested in 2011 and sentenced to eight months for breaching his bail.

On his release, he disappeared before he could be sentenced for the attack on his partner.

But after details of his whereabouts were disclosed to officers, and following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, the National Crime Agency and the French authorities, Soares was arrested on Friday 24 June 2016 under a European Arrest Warrant.

Extradition is now being sought.
