Two spectacular clipper ships will be arriving at Folkestone’s Harbour Arm from noon on Saturday 8 July ready for 26 young people to embark on the voyage of a lifetime.

The voyage is the culmination of a series of challenges that have brought together secondary school pupils from Shepway and Boulogne with the aim of breaking down language barriers, improving confidence and self-esteem and developing team spirit.

The Faramir and Queen Galadriel are due to set sail on Sunday at 1pm, accompanied by a flotilla of small boats. The young crew will complete four days of sailing training and have an opportunity to achieve a Royal Yachting Association qualification before arriving in Boulogne in time for the town’s four day sea festival that starts on 13 July.

The 26 crew members have been chosen from a total of 60 youngsters who took part in a series of challenges on both side of the channel in the run-up to the voyage. They were selected on their attitude and attainment during the challenges.

As well as the clipper ships, live bands, displays, and extra food stalls - all with a nautical theme - are being organised to give the youngsters a spectacular send-off and provide added attractions to the Harbour Arm.

“The Harbour Arm is proving to be one of Folkestone’s favourite places. We are sure the sight of these wonderful training ships and the added events we are putting on will attract even more people,” said a spokesman for Shepway District Council.

“All the young people who took part in the challenges were pushed to their limits but they also had a wonderful time, made new friends and learned how to work as a team. We are looking forward to seeing them off on their adventure.”
