Hawkinge Baptist Church held a service of thanksgiving and party to celebrate the installation of their new lift, pictures above, at the Hawkinge Community Centre.

It might seem unusual to be so thankful for a new lift but the church is on the first floor at the Hawkinge Community Centre.

A lift is essential for many of the congregation and the previous one had developed so many problems that people were regularly stuck inside until an engineer could be called.

The new lift really is something special with plenty of room for wheelchair access and a system for easy rescue should anything fail in future.

Among those attending the event on 24 November were the Mayor and Mayoress of Hawkinge Councillor Glynn Hibbert and Sandra Hibbert.

The Reverend Alison Boddington, Susan Carey, Glyn Hibbert and Sandra Hibbert

Local councillor Susan Carey said, ‘I can now see why everyone is celebrating – it’s spacious, light and altogether a ‘transport of delight.’

Susan’s £500 KCC Member Grant kickstarted the funding appeal for the new lift. The Reverend Alison Boddington of Hawkinge Baptist Church was full of praise for Ability Lifts the company which supplied and installed the lift.

Altogether an uplifting occasion.
