A safe containing cash and jewellery has been stolen in distraction burglary in Dover.

Officers are appealing for witnesses following a report of the burglary in Whitfield.

The incident happened at a property in Sandwich Road between 12pm and 5pm on Wednesday 1 August.

Man offered to do maintenance work

The victim was in her garden when she was approached by a man who offered to do maintenance work to her property. As she was speaking to this man she noticed another man waiting at the end of her driveway.

She declined the offer and went back to her garden. Later that evening she released that a safe, which contained approximately £1,000 worth of jewellery and money, was missing from her bedroom wardrobe.

The man who approached the victim is described as white, between 5ft 7ins and 5ft 10ins and approximately 40 to 45 years old.

Detective Sergeant Heidi Collins said: ‘Distraction thieves prey on the most vulnerable and try to take advantage of a person’s trusting and good nature.

‘The victim in this case has been left devastated by the loss of her property and I can only urge residents to be vigilant to this type of crime.

‘There are many ways you can protect yourself including making sure rear doors and windows are shut and locked when answering your front door; fitting extra security measures such as spy holes, door chains, door locks and intruder alarms and always checking the ID of cold callers. Don’t be afraid to turn people away regardless of their reason for knocking on your door.’

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting ZY/44896/18.

Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers in Kent anonymously on 0800 555 111.
