Three fire engines and a bulk water carrier were sent to reports of a haystack alight on a farm in Park Barn Road, Broomfield, near Herne Bay, just before 9.00pm yesterday, 11 August.

Firefighters discovered 350 tonnes of baled hay alight, with neighbouring structures and overhead power lines threatened by the flames.

Working with the landowner, crews established a perimeter around the fire, preventing it from spreading, and cooling nearby buildings.

To prevent further environmental damage caused by steam and water run-off, the fire was allowed to burn out overnight, with a fire engine on standby to take care of any flare-ups. Crews spent the final part of the job continuing to damp down and turn over burnt hay to avoid reignition and were stood down at 2.00pm today.

There are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is unknown.
