Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke has announced his support for Boris Johnson to be the next Prime Minister – calling him "the person to unite the country and deliver a bright future".

Ten candidates remain in the race to become leader of the Conservative Party – and therefore Prime Minister – after Theresa May confirmed her resignation last month.

Conservative MPs will vote in ballots on June 13, 18 and 19 and 20 – before party members decide between the final two in July.

Charlie said: "Brexit will only be a success if it is seen as an opportunity to be grasped, not a crisis to be managed.

“I have thought about it long and hard. For me Boris is the right person to deliver Brexit, seize the opportunities and take us forward to build a truly global Britain

“He has the strength to make sure we leave the EU. He is the person to unite our country and move Britain to the bright future that lies ahead."

Mr Johnson, a prominent Leave campaigner, has committed to leaving the EU on October 31 with or without a deal.

Charlie Elphicke added: “It is vital that we leave the EU as soon as possible and move on. For too long we’ve had uncertainty. That must now end.

“We need to get on with discussing the other important issues like stronger borders, healthcare, law and order, and how we can turbocharge the economy.

“Boris getting us out of the EU will enable to us to focus on these crucial matters.”
