Folkestone & Hythe District Council (F&HDC) will receive nearly £2m
from the Environment Agency – ensuring up to 3,000 homes along the 7km stretch
of coastline can be protected from flooding.
The works see the recycling and regrading of shingle beaches between Fisherman’s
Beach and Folkestone Harbour. It has been carried out twice a year since the
scheme was first introduced in 2004.
The latest phase started last week and it will take approximately 10 weeks to
complete.
Cllr John Collier, F&HDC Cabinet Member for Property Management and Grounds
Maintenance, said: “Securing the money needed to carry out this essential work
for another five years is a real achievement – it will benefit thousands of our
residents.
“The safety of workers is paramount to us and we have worked closely with our
contractor to ensure the right measures are put in place in light of the
COVID-19 guidance issued by central government.”
Some 71,000m³ of shingle is recycled each year between Fisherman’s Beach and
Folkestone Harbour during the beach management works.
